What Makes Writing a Passionate Activity?

Updated: Apr 3, 2019

The act of writing itself can be sought after for various reasons. As a little girl I kept a diary. I was so excited every time I received a new one and for at least a month would write in it every day. Then it would fade to writing once a week, then once every two weeks, and slowly fade down to losing all interest in writing anything. Even as a teenager I asked myself why I lose interest so fast? I guess sometimes I didn't have much to say or spent my time doing other things.

Looking back, I think what it really boiled down to was losing my passion. I don't think I really cared about what I was writing or why. Telling my diary which boy looked at me that day or why I was mad at my parents, lost its appeal after a while. I wasn't actually writing about anything at all. Again, I was a teenager, so there's that.

So, what is this thing called passion? Do you need it to write at all? I say yes! Many writers pour their innermost thoughts and dreams into their work. A reader can sometimes tell who the author is by their style of writing. Are their stories scary? snarky? short? long? kind? harsh? informative? creative? There's a piece of every author in the story they write.

It's scary for anyone to take their thoughts and emotions and write it out in a story for the world to see. But we do it anyway, don't we? The raw emotion that makes us human drives our passion when it comes to writing. Maybe it's a painful truth from someone's past that sparks their passion. Maybe it's a situation they're currently in that drives them to put pen to paper. Whatever the reason, passion will get the author to a point where they can sit back and say "I did it." Without passion and emotion, writing would just be words on a page.

I've struggled many times trying to get up enough courage to sit down and write. In the back of my head I know I want to, the passion is there, but the feeling of failure stops me. What if you don't like what I write? What if I never get past the first sentence? What if I've ignored everything else in my life just to write, for nothing? In fact, that's what I'm thinking right now as I write this article. Writing is a passionate activity because we invest so much of ourselves into it. That's why I love it and why I love to read. And that's why stories will always exist; because everyone is different, therefore making each story unique.

Negative people are all around us waiting for someone to fail. Don't listen to them. Don't be afraid of them. With passion comes creativity and that's where the best stories come from.

Keep reading... keep creating... keep writing...

I had the same relationships with diaries! And I think you're right, I was more in love with the idea of a diary than I was with the source material :) If you're not passionate about it, it won't last!
